India's Rise: Forged Wheels Exporter & Rail Manufacturing Hub |
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has heralded India's remarkable shift from being a significant importer of forged wheels to becoming a prominent exporter. This transformation was underscored by the unveiling of plans for a new manufacturing facility located in Gummidipoondi, near Chennai. This state-of-the-art plant is slated to specialize in the production of forged wheels specifically tailored for Vande Bharat trains, marking a significant stride towards bolstering India's capabilities in rail manufacturing.
Investment and Production Capacity:
- The plant, a joint venture, received an initial investment of Rs 650 crore.
- Once operational, it will produce 2.5 lakh forged wheels annually.
- 80,000 wheels will serve domestic demand, with 1.70 lakh wheels earmarked for export.
Impact of Geopolitical Events:
- The Russia-Ukraine conflict disrupted wheel imports, highlighting vulnerabilities in the supply chain.
- Domestic production aims to ensure a steady supply for Indian Railways.
Significance of Vande Bharat Trains:
- Vande Bharat trains, known for comfort and speed, are a flagship project of Indian Railways.
- Plans to introduce more trains across various routes signify their importance.
Development of Standard Gauge Vande Bharat Trains:
- Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai will develop standard gauge Vande Bharat trains for export.
- This aligns with plans to export Vande Bharat trains to other nations, leveraging standard gauge tracks.
Contribution to Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat:
- The initiatives boost self-reliance by reducing import dependence and saving foreign exchange.
- Exporting indigenously developed trains showcases India's engineering prowess globally.
These developments underscore India's emergence as a key player in the international railways market, fueled by domestic manufacturing and innovation.
