Notes on the administration of Andaman and Nicobar Islands:
- In 1874, the British established the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as one administrative territory headed by a Chief Commissioner who served as its judicial administrator.
- On 1 August 1974, the Nicobar Islands were separated and formed into another revenue district with its district headquarters at Car Nicobar, under a Deputy Commissioner.
- In 1982, the post of Lieutenant Governor was created, replacing the Chief Commissioner as the head of administration.
- The Lieutenant Governor is responsible for the overall administration of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
- The Islands also have a "Pradesh council" composed of Councillors who act as representatives of the people and advise the Lieutenant Governor.
- The Andaman and Nicobar Islands send one representative to the Lok Sabha from its Andaman and Nicobar Islands constituency.
Administrative Divisions
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are divided into three districts:
- North and Middle Andaman with its capital at Mayabunder.
- South Andaman with its capital at Port Blair.
- Nicobar with its capital at Car Nicobar.
