In terms of districts, there are 70 coastal districts in India. Out of which, 66 districts are on mainland, 3 in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and 1 in Lakshadweep.
In terms of population, the coastal states are home to more than 560 million people out of 1.28 billion peoplpe in India. Moreover, at district level, coastal districts are home to more than 171 million people in India, which makes up 14.2 per cent of overall Indian population. (2014)
Some of major Indian coastal cities are Chennai, Kochi, Mumbai, Surat, Visakhapatnam, Puducherry, Kanyakumari, Puri, Mangalore and Kolkata.
In terms of ports, there are 13 major ports and 174 minor ports on the coast of India.
