The Basheer Award was instituted in 2008 by the Vaikom Muhammad Basheer Smaraka Trust to honour Indian Independence Activits, Socialist and Malayalam Writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, fondly known as Beypore Sultan. As of 2019, the award consists of a cash purse of 25,000, a certificate and a plaque. The plaque is designed by C. N. Karunakaran.
N Prabhakaran was the first person to win this prestigious Basheer Award for 2008. Sara Joseph became the fist woman to win Basheer Award in 2010. VJ James is the latest recipient of the award for his novel Nireeshwaran.
