It is interesting to note that about 3 per cent of the Chhattisgarh populace identifies themselves as the followers of Sarnaism, an indigenous religion propagated by the indigenous tribal population. It is also interesting to note that more and more tribals do not wish to recognize themselves as Hindus and vying Government to recognize their tribal religions as a recognized religion.
Moreover, there is rise in religious tension between Hindus and Christians. With tribals adopting Christianity as their choice of faith due to various reasons, one can note several rise in conflict between Hindu orthodox and Christians converts and missionaries.

Women, Witchcraft and Superstition in Chhattisgarh
The people of Chhattisgarh are very superstitious in nature. This can be attributed to their tribal roots. They often accused women of being witches (tonhi). The accusation is often used to get personal gains. For example, widows with no issues are accused of witchcraft so that one can snatch property and other possession from them.
Nowadays, several NGOs are working together in order to stop this witch hunt and other superstitions. The Government of Chhattisgarh has also enacted Chhattisgarh Tonhi Atyachar (Niwaran) Act, 2005 to do away with this malice.
On flip side, there are female priests, candidly known as Gurmayis among their community members. These women are responsible to organize Jaggar, an annual religious gathering.
