Library Networks in India

A library network refers to a group of libraries which come together with an aim to offer a better library experience and service to their users by pooling their resources. The member libraries generally follow an identical set of rules and procedures. The networking also allows its members to come up with a unique and more valuable collection and resolve duplication and budgetary problems.

The concept of library network came into the light when the Planning Commission recommended a new plan to modernize libraries of India to Government of India in 1985. These recommendations by the Planning Commission get thrust from a report on library automation and networking published by University Grant Commission. The Government of India through the Department of Science and Industrial Research (DSIR) flags the programme in 1987.
