List of Lieutenant Governors of Delhi |
The post was first established in September 1966, when the Delhi Administration Act, 1966 came into effect. At that point of time, Delhi Legislative Assembly was replaced by the Delhi Metropolitan Council with 56 elected and 5 nominated members with the Lt. Governor of Delhi as its head. Delhi Metropolitan Council has no legislative power and played an advisory role. This set up functioned until 1990.
The Delhi Metropolitan Council was again replaced by Delhi Legislative Assembly through the Constitution (Sixty-ninth Amendment) Act, 1991, followed by the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991 which declared the Union Territory of Delhi to be formally known as National Capital Territory of Delhi and supplements the constitutional provisions relating to the Legislative Assembly and the Council of Ministers and related matters.
Lt. Governor retained its role, but he again became de jure head of NCT.
