Padma Vibhushan (List of Winners 1954--2018) |
In 1954 Satyendra Nath Bose, Nand Lal Bose, Zakir Hussain, Balasaheb Gangadhar Kher, Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, and VK Krishna Menon were the first recepients of the Padma Vibhushan Awards.
The recepients receives a medallion and a certificate. No monetary grant is associated with the award.
There are few personalities who refused Padma Vibhushan. PN Haksar is the first person to do so. He was offered Padma Vibhushan in 1973 for his diplomatic services. He played a crucial role in brokering the Indo-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation and the Shimla Agreement, but he declined the award by saying "accepting an award for work done somehow causes an inexplicable discomfort to me."
Vilayat Khan, EMS Namboodiripad, Swami Ranganathananda, and Manikonda Chalapathi Rau are other few who refused the award. The family members of Lakshmi Chand Jain (2011) and Sharad Anantrao Joshi (2016) declined their posthumous conferments.
1986 Padma Vibhushan recepient Baba Amte was the first person to return the prestigious award along with his Padma Shri Award (1971) to protest against the treatment given to the tribals during the construction of Sardar Sarovar Dam.
Jigme Dorji Wangchuck was the first non-Indian to win the prestigious award.
Adityanath Jha was the first person to get this award posthumously.
